Subject: Itsell's Clothing Store/ Charlie Itsell

Jeff,

Enclosed find a picture of my Dad. I was reading the different stories about

the old eateries in Howell. Also some of the other places.

It brought back old memories of Dad's Clothing Store. It was first located

next to Livingston's Drug Store in the middle of the block on Grand River

Ave.

It was originally called Herman's Clothing, Dad bought it from Ben Herman in

the 1950's. Later he moved it to the corner of Grand River & Michigan Ave.,

across from Baldwin's Drug Store.

I especially remember how Dad used to enjoy when all the guys from school

would come and hang out at the store. We had a ping pong table set-up in the

basement. Everyone was constantly challenging each other to see who was the

best in town. The best guy at that time was older than all of us, and, that

was Jack Shinn. He was the owner of Shinn's Barber Shop. (Jackie Shinn's

dad) If anyone has pictures of the old store, maybe they will send them in

to you. I am looking for old photos of the interior and some of the guys

that used to work for Dad.

I also remember that the guys used to like to test Dad in arm wrestling

contests. They would brag how tough they were, until Dad would put them down

1,2,3. He would get them talking about sports or school while wrestling,

distracting them and then put them down and laugh seeing how disgusted they

would get. He was an old farm boy and used to be a foreman for the Michigan

Tree Trimming Service.

Also maybe some people will remember some good times or things that happened

at the store or with Dad.

Here is a old photo of my dad, my uncle Bob & Jack Shinn.

Not sure where it was taken, or the time frame.

 Maybe someone will update us.

Keep up the good work Jeff, I enjoy reading all the stories of the old days

in Highlander Country.

Tom

Subject: Sad News

Jeff,

Can you send out an email for prayers for my husband Archie?

He had been doing so good. I had him eating by mouth again and the stomach tube was taken out.  He recently spent two weeks in VA for a bowel blockage that got resolved but they were not monitoring his seizure medicine level like they were suppose to be but told me they were and it dropped so low he had a horrible gran mal on Tuesday morning. His blood pressure dropped so low it couldnt be read and his pulse was faint when the ambulance got here. He was barely breathing. They had to put him on a ventilator as soon as they got him to the hospital. He does wake up and responds with blinking his eyes but can not breathe on his own. They are keeping him heavily sedated many times during the day because the ventilator is irrating him so much his blood pressure and pulse goes way to high. He is in our Howell hospital ICU thank God. They are doing a wonderful job with what they have to work with. Thank You

Hugs

Carolyn

Subject: Brenda is home!!

I was able to bring Brenda home last evening around 6:30.  She is doing good.  Got a good night sleep last night.  She is eating OK and doesn't have to have the nutritional (TPN) IV anymore.  They took her picc line out at the hospital.  She is still sore from the procedure on Friday where they removed some gall stones.  She is still on the antibioctic for the infection she had from the picc line.  She still has the wound vac connected her the open wound on her stomach.  That is healing but very slowly.  She is looking forward to the weekend.  We have some friends visiting from Texas and hopefully our kids families will be with us for the day on Sunday.

Thanks for all your prayers and thoughts.

Terry

2009 Alumni Baseball Game

The 3rd annual fundraiser for the Howell Baseball program and the Alumni Scholarship Fund tool place on Saturday, July 18 at the varsity baseball field in Howell. Player's donation is $40 (each player receives a hat and jersey to keep)
This year's event honored the 1910 State Championship team by wearing shirts that mimic the original jerseys.

Howell Junior Baseball organizer and long-time youth sports coach Jess Mack threw out the first pitch to his son Jon.
Also, former varsity coach Ted Klontz (who was responsible for the resurgence of Howell Baseball back in the mid 1970s) traveled from his home in Tennessee.

Jeff,

I had a great trip to sunny California over the Holidays . . . well it was sunny and very windy, but not as warm as Florida.  I left FL in the 70's for CA in the 50's. . . hence I headed for Palm Springs for New Years.  In an event, I did have a great day with Chuck and Gail on Huntington Beach over the Christmas Holidays. Due, to the short notice, all in the area were not able to attend the mini reunion.  Maybe next year in CA or South East area in AZ,TX, LA, GA or FL.  I would like to keep it going across the country.  I like Austin, New Orleans, HuntingtonPalm SpringsAtlanta. . . . other ideas from other from the Class of 67'?  I am willing to work this end of the Country.  Michigan in Lansing was fun and I miss the trip last year due to ???.

Subject: Brenda is back in the hospital

I had to admit Brenda back into the hospital yesterday.  She has been fighting a cold for about a week.  Unfortunately I think I brought it into the house, since I and Brenda's Dad had it two weeks ago.  She has had a bad cough, so on Monday when we were at the KCC Pheresis Dept. for a photopheresis treatment, the doctor gave her a prescription for an antibiotic and cough syrup, and also ordered an xray for the next day.  During the night she started having some vomiting and diareaha.  Yesterday morning we went to Xray before going to the pheresis Dept.  After the xray Brenda wasn't feeling very well so I took her to the BMT clinic to see a Dr.  The xray showed some phnuemonia and she was still having trouble keeping food down.  So they admitted her to the KCC eighth floor.  Her room # is 8219 and her phone # is 313-745-6408.  Looks like we will be spending New Years Eve and New Years Day in the hospital.  Hopefully they will get this under control quickly and she will be able to come home early next week.

Thanks for all your thoughts and Prayers!  Brenda and I wish you all a Happy New Year!

Hi, Jeff -

My name is Joann McKim and I represent the Howell Athletic Boosters Commemorative Brick Program.  If you think your members may be interested in purchasing an engraved brick, please pass on or post this information on your alumni website.  Our commemorative area is located just outside the Howell Football stadium in the circular planting bed.

The following is copy I've used trying to promote the program, I've also attached our order form.

Howell High is back in it's glory, with the reopening of the renovated campus!  If you have wanted to leave your mark in HHS history, but weren't sure how...this might do the trick.  Purchase a brick to honor your graduate, alumni, a special teacher or coach, etc.  Simply download the order form, fill it out and send it in to the booster PO box, and we will take care of the rest!  The walkway is in the circular area, just outside the entrance to the HHS football field.

Hello Parents & Alums,

Welcome to the 2008-09 school year. The PTO at Howell High School is in place and raring to go. There are several ways we ask for assistance throughout the year, please take a momonet to fill out the attached form and return it to the school so we can add you to our data base.

One of the goals we hope to accomplish this year is to keep you informed. We are currently in the process of setting up our PTO webpage. The webpage will help us accomplish our goal of keeping you informed by providing weekly updates. Our group supports many activities at the high school and the activities would not be possible without your time and support.

One of the ways we look to Howell High School families for support is by asking each family to make a $20 donation to the PTO. The donations collected are used in variety areas and activities for the students and staff. At the High School the donation is requested instead of asking families to participate in fundraising activities.

Donations can be submitted to the Main Office at either the Freshman Campus Building or the 10-12 Campus Building at Open House on Tuesday, September 16th. If you are unable to attend Open House the donation can be sent to school with your student and dropped off at the Main Office or via mail to HHS PTO 1200 W. Grand River, Howell, MI  48843. Please make checks payable to HHS PTO.

We thank you in advance for all of your help and support that make our program a success! Please email me, Lisa McQueen, at lisamcq@att.net or call me with any questions at 517-546-2937.

Thank you again,

Brenda came home today.  She is feeling good.  A little week because the increased the dosage of steroids while she was in the hospital.

She went in the hospital on Friday the 4th.  She had chills and a fever.  They found a bacterial infection and started treating it with an antibioctic.  This infection caused the GVHD to kick in again and she broke down with a rash and alot of itching.  So they increased the steroid which helped with the GVHD.

She will continue the antibioctic at home and they will start reducing the steroid dosage.

Thanks again for all your prayers and thoughts!

Brenda is back in the hospital.  She has had some fevers lately and they took blood cultures on Wednesday during the regular clinic visit.  They came back positive and the doctor called us yesterday (Fri. July 4th) and told me to bring her in the the ER at Harper.  She had chills when he called and a fever as we went to the hospital.

They admitted her yesterday around 5:00pm.  They started an antibioctic and are still doing blood tests to determined what infection she has.  Hopefully she will only be in the hospital for a few days.  She is in room 10213 (one of the 19 rooms in the KCC BMT unit she hasn't been in yet) and her phone # is 313-745-6862.

Greetings and salutations from Ireland!
The weather has been fantastic! As a matter of fact, we both got quite a sunburn today on a boat trip out to the Blasket Islands. Took a trip to Great Blasket and an Eco tour around the islands. Saw many primitive homes and beehive houses, walked among the sheep, and saw the Prime Minister's island which is home to puffins and seals. Simply fantastic!
Staying in a lovely guest home in Dingle right now. After 4 days in Kinsale and 3 outside Tipperary, we will be off to Galway and Doolin tomorrow. Still have a week left and the only regrets are missing my mom and kids. Been texting the kids and all is well.
Having the time of our lives! Will bore anyone with pix when we get home. Only have about 3000 to share. Got a week? :-)
Here's looking up your kilt!

Subject: Michael Burke Never enough

Michael J Burke, life long resident of Howell, Howell High School Graduate Class of 1964 shares the pain of his addictions, the struggle to regain his life and repay his debt.

Never Enough is the shocking, true story of Michael J. Burke, who went from being a successful lawyer, loving father and husband, and respected member of his community to a closet alcoholic and gambling addict to the tune of $1,600,000, using client's trust account funds.

Follow Michael Burke as he descends into his addictions, then must confess all to his family and clients. Then read about his arraignment, and the actual transcripts from his sentencing. Burke then shares stories of his prison life, and then the painful narrative of how his lies and deceit affected his family. In the last two chapters of this important book you'll learn how you can identify a compulsive gambler, and what treatment options are available for this devastating disease. The appendix features comments Mr. Burke has received from the many presentations he has made on the dangers of compulsive gambling, as well as the letters to the court written by Michael Burke's friends in the community before his sentencing, and a list of gambling addiction resources for each state.

Never Enough is a succinct, powerful book that will open your eyes to the reality of gambling and alcohol addiction and what it can do to any professional's life -- even in the happiest and most successful of situations.

 http://neverenoughthebook.com/index.htm

"When Michael Burke read excerpts from his book to members of the Washtenaw County Bar Association, the attorneys were riveted by his compelling story of the hometown boy who became one of the most successful attorneys in town only to lose it all to an ever-increasing addiction to gambling. In Never Enough, Michael shares with great passion and insight his fascinating transformation from loving husband and father to disgraced prison inmate. Remarkably, you'll find yourself rooting for a man who let his family and friends down through deceit and the theft of over a million dollars from the clients who entrusted him with their affairs. But that's what redemption is about: the recognition of wrongs committed, the drive to make things right for the aggrieved, and the devotion to preventing others from succumbing to the same demons that led to one's downfall. Michael will receive no income from Never Enough until all his victims are made whole. I am hopeful that those who read his story will share it with others, thereby assisting Michael in his mission of warning others about the dangers of casino gambling. I heartily recommend this book for every lawyer in America and to anyone whose life is being sadly touched by a loved one undergoing an addiction of any kind.

Washtenaw County Bar Association, Ann Arbor, Michigan

Saturday night the famous Gem Theatre was the place to be for Howell Archives president, Duane Zemper.

Scanning the program, he found the category he was looking for near the back page. It was going to be a long night.

Zemper attended the 30th Annual National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Michigan EMMY awards

with producer, Donna Ryen and editor, Matt Zacharias from Michigan Television who were responsible for the

Documentary, WWII: Through the Lens of Duane Zemper.

Ryen, also nominated for Childhood Places, Secret Spaces and Bijou Orchestra, made two trips to the

stage midway through the evening to receive EMMY awards for both productions.

As Ryen returned to the table with the second EMMY in hand,  Zemper held his breath,

Well, I was thinking, oh, oh, she has two and I didnt think they would give three to one person.

Then it was time.

ï¿½Our next category, Historical Documentary, said the announcer.

Zemper then heard sweet music, The Emmy goes to.

WWII: Through the Lens of Duane Zemper, Donna Ryen, producer, WFUM-TV Michigan Television.

Donna Ryen captured the story of Howell resident Duane Zemper who served as a photo reconnaissance

officer with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He returned with stunning photographs of the air war

and amazing stories of the courage displayed by the bomber and ground crews.

Ryen is proud of all her work but this documentary holds a special place in her heart and the one for

which she most wanted the EMMY.

I am so proud to be a part of preserving the stories of these Veterans. They came home and went about

the business of getting on with life. Some were telling their stories for the first time.  We can never thank them

enough for their service to this country.  I have been touched deeply and have developed many lasting relationships.

Zemper s first  thought, being a sport fan, A Hat Trick! Wow!

Hi Jeff,

I am the daughter of Dick and Marilou McMacken (maiden name Fletcher). Unfortunately both of my parents have passed away and I am looking for any stories about them to put in a book for my children as they will never know them and love to hear stories about them. Would it be possible to get this posted on your site, in hopes that somebody may have some stories to share with me and my children. If you post this, my email address for the stories is
mcmackenfamilystories@gmail.com.

Thanks
Erin McMacken
(now McTeer)

Brenda came home from the hospital on Friday.  This was her shortest stay in the hospital.  Praise the Lord!!  On Friday they installed a new picc line and started a new antibioctic to kill the bug in her blood stream.

She is feeling good.  She helped me plant flowers yesterday and make dinner for our daughters family today.

Thanks for all of your thoughts and prayers.

Hi Jeff

It's Denise Brown (would be class of 77 if I had not moved to Arizona in the summer of 73).  I've been to every Reunion so far so I am like the ....adopted classmate.  Thanks for all you do on this website.  I was born and raised in Howell as were about 5+ generations before me.  I come home every summer and still call Howell "home".

I do genealogy and I am actually writing a book which will include a chapter about Howell.  I am wondering if you and/or your readers can help me out with a few things I'm stumped on.

The first thing that has got me dead-ended is this...There used to be a pizza place on the south side of Grand River Avenue just past the Grand View motel.  I swear is was the original Val's!!  I could be wrong about that, because Val's just sticks in my brain.
There were no tables inside or out.  This was a tiny place were you just walked up to the screen window and placed your order. It was in operation from at least 1962 to 1973.

Next, I cannot find a decent photo of the D&C store.  I copied the one from the website but it is a poor scan.  I have a picture of Ben Franklin's, A&W and a few other places.  I would also like to get one of the old Tastee Freeze, which was by Krogers at one time.  Also I could use a better photo of Spag's if anyone has one.  I have several but they are fuzzy and ambiguous looking..ha ha.

That's all that I can think of right now, but I am certain other questions will come up as I get the outline drawn up.

Regards,

Denise

Jeff,

I stumbled across your website this morning while surfing thru the HPS website. I am a Howell Grad from 1984.

You may or may not know but Howell Schools lost one of their most loved teachers. Leonard Zubris-retired Auto shop teacher passed away on April 10th in N. Fort Meyers Fl. from a massive heart attack. I had Mr. Zubris (known

as "Zube" to his students) for two years from 1982 to 1984. He was a good

friend and mentor and I would like to honor him by setting up a scholarship

in his name. Please go to:

<http://forums.livingstondaily.com/viewtopic.php?t=16058>  to see the online

thread discussion with some of my former classmates regarding the

scholarship idea.

I see that you may be able to provide some direction with this endeavor and

would greatly appreciate any assistance you may have to offer.

Looking forward to hearing from you and Thank you,

Ron Howard
