1939

Ralph L. Peckens  (January 14, 1922 - February 26, 2010) of Chase Lake Road, Cohoctah Township, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, February 26, 2010. He was born in this same home on January 14, 1922 to Charles and Clara (Smith) Peckens, and was immediately followed by his twin brother, Paul M. who has preceded him in death in 2001. He attended the Russell Elementary school, and graduated from Howell High School in 1939. In 1942 he married his high school sweetheart, Mary Eileen Kirkland, and she survives. The couple have four children, Patricia Petrella (Kerry), Dianne Maynard (Thomas), David (Katherine) Peckens, and Lynn (Linda) Peckens, eleven grandchildren, one step-grandchild, 12 great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. Ralph was a devoted father, a good neighbor, and always a dedicated farmer. He and his wife Mary purchased the original Peckens farm in 1950 and it became a Centennial farm in 1960. The original farm was owned by his grandfather Alexander, and consisted of 80 acres, but had grown to 240 acres at the time of purchase. Then it grew to 620 acres and remains so today, being owned now by son David and wife Katherine. Ralph served 25 years as Township Clerk, and helped install the punch card system for voting along with Conway and Handy Townships who were the first townships in the county to do so. He also served on the Howell Recreation committee. He was a board member for Livingston County Farm Bureau, and also served on the State Policy Development committee. A lifelong member of the Oak Grove United Methodist Church, he served as Chairman of the Administrative Board for approximately 20 years, and was also a member of the Building committee for the merging of the three congregations and building of the new Oak Grove United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Michigan Milk Producers for over 35 years. It was during these years that he was able to indulge in some recreation in addition to his vocation of farming . It was in the early 1980’s that he first began to bowl, first joining the bowling league at his church and continued to bowl up until this past year. He also did some golfing. When he contemplated his retirement in the 1980’s he purchased a mobile home in Zephyrhills, FL, and he and Mary spent over 20 years of wintering there. These were truly golden years for they were able to do some traveling going to Hawaii twice, to Australia and New Zealand, to the Phillipines and Bangkok when daughter Dianne and son-in-law Tom were stationed there in the Air Force. Memorable trips with the Livingston First Club were also enjoyed. Ralph was preceded in death by three brothers, Kenneth and Paul of Howell, Harry of Otsego and sister, Clara Agnes Blackburn of Colorado. EVELYN STREBBING - The world and the lives of her family grew a little quieter on Friday, January 16, 2009 when the matriarch, Evelyn E. Strebbing passed away. We had been blessed to have her for 108 birthdays and 108 Christmases. Evelyn's journey started out on Christmas Day, 1900 in Redford, Michigan as Evelyn Ester Ries. She had remarked throughout her life that her birthday was easy to remember, but somehow she felt she was owed either l08 more birthday presents or 108 more Christmas presents. She grew up as one of eight children. Evelyn married William R. Strebbing the day before Thanksgiving, 1920. The couple took up residence on their farm in Howell, Michigan where they raised two sons, Raymond and William Jr. and a daughter, Virginia. With her husband's death in August of 1950, Evelyn and the family relocated to Howell proper. Her independent and entrepreneurial spirit at the forefront, she earned her own way through life. She taught herself the skills necessary for success and to make herself valuable in the business world. Ever industrious, she always kept a vegetable garden and flowers beds. Evelyn retired in 1965. She managed her own home and her own affairs for many years thereafter. When she was 99 years young - and not without a little trepidation - she decided to take life a little easier. In 2005, she moved to the Pine Haven Care Center in Pine Island, Minnesota to be near her surviving son, Raymond. This Grand Dame will be missed by her son Raymond, daughter-in-law Jean, ten grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren. Private services for Evelyn will be held at a later date. Arrangements by MacDonald's Funeral Home, Howell (516-546-2800). Please visit the family's online guestbook at www.macdonaldsfuneralhome.com.
