EVELYN STREBBING - The world and the lives of her family grew a little
quieter on Friday, January 16, 2009 when the matriarch, Evelyn E. Strebbing
passed away. We had been blessed to have her for 108 birthdays and 108
Christmases. Evelyn's journey started out on Christmas Day, 1900 in Redford, Michigan
as Evelyn Ester Ries. She had remarked throughout her life that her birthday
was easy to remember, but somehow she felt she was owed either l08 more
birthday presents or 108 more Christmas presents. She grew up as one of eight
children. Evelyn married William R. Strebbing the day before Thanksgiving,
1920. The couple took up residence on their farm in Howell, Michigan
where they raised two sons, Raymond and William Jr. and a daughter, Virginia.
With her husband's death in August of 1950, Evelyn and the family relocated to
Howell proper. Her independent and entrepreneurial spirit at the forefront, she
earned her own way through life. She taught herself the skills necessary for
success and to make herself valuable in the business world. Ever industrious,
she always kept a vegetable garden and flowers beds. Evelyn retired in 1965.
She managed her own home and her own affairs for many years thereafter. When
she was 99 years young - and not without a little trepidation - she decided to
take life a little easier. In 2005, she moved to the PineHavenCareCenter in Pine Island, Minnesota
to be near her surviving son, Raymond. This Grand Dame will be missed by her
son Raymond, daughter-in-law Jean, ten grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren,
and eight great-great-grandchildren. Private services for Evelyn will be held
at a later date. Arrangements by MacDonald's Funeral Home, Howell
(516-546-2800). Please visit the family's online guestbook at

to William James and Olive (Hill) Appling and went to her final resting
place on December 31, 2007 surrounded by her family. In 1915 she moved
with her family to Fenton where her paternal grandparents, William and
Alma Appling lived. She attended school in Detroit, Fenton, country schools in Deerfield Twp. and near Parshallville, and HartlandConsolidated School.
Her mother died in 1920 and she missed a great deal of school due to
staying home to care for her younger siblings. As a child she worked at
picking berries, cleaning house and babysitting to help with family
finances. In High School she worked for a family that ran a hardware
store, gas pumps and the local telephone exchange and she learned to
operate everything. She graduated from HartlandHigh School
in 1926, attended Livingston County Normal and in June 1927 earned her
teaching certificate. She taught school for one year at the Baetke
school in Genoa Twp. prior to her marriage. On March 30, 1928 she
married Albert J. Coddington of Genoa Twp. in Howell, MI. Their honeymoon consisted of spending the night with relatives and moving to their own farm home on Beck Road the next day. After two years they moved to Bowan Road, south
of Fowlerville where they bought a farm. Olive had to milk cows by hand
during the depression while Albert worked other jobs in order to make
ends meet. Later they bought a farm on Crooked Lake Road where Olive raised chickens and sold eggs for extra income. In May 1943 they purchased the farm on Pinckney Road.
Between 1929 and 1941 they had four children during which time Olive
helped with the farming as well as maintaining her home. They sold most
of the farm during the early 1960s but continued to live in a home on
the original farm. Olive also worked at Baldwin's Hardware in Howell,
taught school in several one room rural schools and BirkenstockSchool.
She needed to have a four year degree in order to continue teaching and
earned her BS degree from Eastern Michigan University in 1962 and
taught until 1964 when she devoted her time to caring for her
grandchildren. Olive was a member of the WalnutStreetMethodistChurch and later the FirstUnitedMethodistChurch in Howell. She belonged to the Ruth Circle, the Philathea Class and Hilltoppers.
