2009 Alumni Baseball Game

2009 Alumni Baseball Game

The 3rd annual fundraiser for the Howell Baseball program and the Alumni Scholarship Fund tool place on Saturday, July 18 at the varsity baseball field in Howell. Player's donation is $40 (each player receives a hat and jersey to keep)
This year's event honored the 1910 State Championship team by wearing shirts that mimic the original jerseys.

Howell Junior Baseball organizer and long-time youth sports coach Jess Mack threw out the first pitch to his son Jon.
Also, former varsity coach Ted Klontz (who was responsible for the resurgence of Howell Baseball back in the mid 1970s) traveled from his home in Tennessee.

Several alums flew in for the event: Gary Merians and Jon Mack from Florida, Phil Milner from South Carolina, Brad Robinson from Virginia, and Mike Brown from Ohio. The Press-Argus, WHMI and Hub TV provided support for the event.
Anyone who played varsity baseball for Howell is encouraged to sign up for the 2010 game and me, Rich Robinson, at HowellHighlandersBaseball@gmail.com

Bert Tooley MVP Award

Albert R. "Bert" Tooley was born on Monday, August 30, 1886, in Howell, Michigan. Tooley was 24 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 12, 1911, with the Brooklyn Dodgers. He is by all accounts the first (and so far) the only Howell HS alum to play in the major leagues.  Source: http://www.baseball-almanac.com

Each year, the event's creative genius and HHS alum Rich Robinson works with the Howell High School's Athletic Department along with the Howell Alumni Association to sponsor an annual HHS Alumni Baseball game at the HHS varsity field.

And each year an MVP is selected and that player's name is inscribed on the "Bert Tooley Award" and the trophy is displayed at Howell High School.
